Spanish Movie Night with Smoked Paprika Popcorn-Part I

March 26, 2020 by Liz

As we all cope with our new reality of working from home we thought it would be fun to share some Spanish movie favs to make the best of it. Give your forced staycation a Spanish flair by traveling to Spain from your own sofa! Try watching along with our Spanish Style Smoked Paprika Popcorn. Open a bottle of Bokisch Tempranillo to get you in the spirit! You’ll be reading those subtitles like a pro in no time at all!

So, now that you’ve got your popcorn in hand, open a bottle of Bokisch wine and settle in for a mini sofa excursion to Spain with one of the following recommendations!

The Cathedral of the Sea:

This is a two-for! You can read the book first (recommended) and then watch the Series on Netflix. The story takes place in 14th Century Barcelona and is a historical fiction about a young man who joins the fisherman’s guild of stonemasons. He helps carry the stones from the mountain of Montjuic to build Santa Maria del Mar Cathedral (located in the Born/Gothic quarter of Barcelona). There is love, romance, war, and betrayal. As expected, the book is better than the series, but they do a great job in giving an inside view of life during the medieval times. Loved by Game of Thrones fans!

Live Twice, Love Once:

This movie was recommended to us by one of our club members. We loved it! It’s an endearing story of a professor in Valencia who develops Alzheimer’s and his quest to find his first love. It addresses the challenges of dealing with a loved one who has memory loss and how important it is to be patient and give them the love they deserve. It is actually a comedy, drama and the 11 year old granddaughter is a handful to say the least! It’s a Netflix Original.

Aerial Spain:

This is a 3 part documentary series on Amazon Prime that takes you above the Spanish landscape. Get your map and travel books out so you can prepare for your next trip to Spain. The photography is beautiful. The narration is informative but could be a little more fun in my opinion. But seriously, it’s like taking a virtual tour of the country!

Spanish Affair & Spanish Affair 2:

This is a full on ridiculous Spanish comedy that plays on all the cultural differences between the Basques, the Catalans, the Andalusians, and everyone in between. If you know any Spanish, you will really get a kick out of the slang and the cultural jabs poking fun at one another (and you will probably need the subtitles anyhow in order to follow along!) However, don’t worry! It doesn’t take any knowledge of Spanish to pick up on the culture clash between the young man, the girl of his dreams, the future father-in-law and the ex-wife. Think back to those silly 70’s comedy shows all bundled into one movie! Both are available on Netflix.

Hope you enjoy this selection of movies! We are working on some more recommendations coming your way to a sofa near you!
